Hero ISL: Mumbai debut shocker for Anelka as Chennaiyin hit five

Chennaiyin FC moved up to second in the table after thrashing Mumbai City FC - managed by former Sunderland coach, Peter Reid - 5-1.

It didn't take long for the hosts to open the scoring, after former Manchester City player, Elano put them ahead on 9 minutes from the penalty spot. Manuel Friedrich's rash tackle on Valencia gave the referee no option but to award Chennaiyin a penalty, which Elano slotted home.

Chennaiyin increased their lead on 26 minutes, Elano's perfectly timed his through ball to Jeje who slid it past the keeper. In the 41st minute, Chennaiyin pretty much wrapped up the game, after Elano's free kick was parried by Mumbai keeper, Subrata Paul, Valencia was there to take advantage and fire home the third.

They weren't finished there however, and on the 44th minute, just before half time, they added a fourth, after Valencia collected an aerial ball from Harmanjot Khabra and calmly slotted past the keeper for his second of the game.

Chennaiyin made it 5-0 in the 69th minute, after Elano scored his second from a spectacular free kick. There was time for a consolation goal for Mumbai in the 87th minute, when Andre Moritz corner found the head of Nabi, but that didn't dampen the hosts mood after a spectacular performance.

It was a poor Mumbai debut for former Liverpool and Chelsea striker Nicolas Anelka and Reid lamented afterwards to indiansuperleague.com: "I think it was a difficult game for Nicolas because we were under pressure after conceding and they really defended well with (Bernard) Mendy at the back and (Marco) Materazzi in the midfield.

"Nicolas lasted the 90 minutes, it's something he hasn't done in a long time but one man doesn't make the team. I really expected more from Mumbai City as a team."

On Chennaiyin, he added: "It was just balls down the middle, it's not rocket science. We just had to stay with the runners but we just didn't do it. Take nothing away from Chennai, they were brilliant, we were just poor on the night."
