Jordan Henderson admits Liverpool's players held talks before the start of the season after Luis Suarez's sale to Barcelona.
Henderson, Steven Gerrard and the remaining players talked in pre-season of the need to show the world they were not a one-man team.
"That was the attitude,'' Henderson told the Sunday Telegraph. "Luis was a massive player for us. It wasn't just his class in terms of scoring and assists, it was his overall attitude to the game, how hard he worked for the team. He was a real leader for us.
"Losing him was disappointing. Everyone learned from him. I still felt we had enough ability in the team to challenge for the Premier League. At the start, we couldn't find our rhythm and the injury to Daniel (Sturridge) was a double blow to us. Then the gaffer found a formation that suited us really well. From that point we improved, confidence came back and we've built some good momentum."
