Danny Guthrie admits defeat to Fulham left Newcastle United players stunned.

Fulham only managed one shot during the opening 45 minutes as the Magpies took a deserved lead through Guthrie's superb long-range effort.

However, after the break the visiting support only had Hatem Ben Arfa's late consolation goal to celebrate, leaving players and supporters shocked.

"Considering how well we played in the first half [I am shocked]," midfielder Guthrie said.

"We were completely in control and 1-0 up. We've let ourselves down second half.

"You should never put yourself in that position.

"There was a 20-minute period when it was just unacceptable and they were getting in behind us too easily.

"They were bringing it down too easily off the front. It was really disappointing."
