Grealish put his hand up for Aston Villa selection

Aston Villa manager Tim Sherwood has revealed that Jack Grealish is in contention for selection for this weekend but Carles Gil is not fit as of yet.

Grealish has missed Villa's first two Premier League matches due to injury but the youngster made a return to the pitch during the Under-21's 1-0 victory over Derby in midweek, where he scored the only goal of the game.

Sherwood has now revealed that Grealish has proven his fitness and will be in contention to play in the clash against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park this weekend but the 46-year-old has ruled out Spanish midfielder Gil.

Sherwood said: "The Derby match was a good workout for the boys. They need games - the lads who haven't been playing. It was a good fitness exercise first and foremost.

"I thought Jack was very good. He played to the last minute. He looked fit enough to maybe be up for selection this weekend. Carles came off with a tight groin which is an indication the lack of training he has actually done. He will get fitter."
