Liverpool star Joe Gomez wants to capitalise on the injury crisis to solidify his place in the starting lineup.

There are only two fit centre-backs at the club right now, if we include Gomez and Virgil Van Dijk.

It is why the youngster knows that he must perform at a high level to ensure he remains in the team when others come back.

Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren are currently on the treatment table.

"You never want to prey on anyone's downfall," he told Liverpool's website.

"I myself have been there with injuries and so on and I know it's far from a nice place to be.

"But it's part and parcel of the game and it's why we have to work hard when we're not involved to be prepared.

"On a personal note, it's an opportunity but the main thing is trying to participate as best I can to perform for the team."
