GOLD CUP WRAP - Day 2: Jamaica ease past Grenada as Honduras and Guatemala draw

Day 2 of the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup was completed yesterday with another one-sided result and the tournament's first draw.

Following on from Costa Rica's 5-0 hammering of Cuba and Mexico's 5-0 thrashing of El Salvador on Sunday, Jamaica kept the goalscoring going with a 4-0 result over Grenada in an all-Caribbean Group B affair at The Home Depot Centre in Carson, California.

Valerenga winger Luton Shelton flicked a Rodolph Austin cross over Grenada keeper Shemel Louison before San Jose Earthquakes forward Ryan Johnson made it 2-0 six minutes before half-time with a tap-in from a Dane Richards pass.

Demar Phillips grabbed a third just over 10 minutes from time before Omar Daley made it 4-0 to give the Reggae Boyz a perfect start to the competition, delighting manager Theodore Whitmore.

"We looked at this as our toughest assignment as a Caribbean team. The Grenadians played the sort of game we expected them to play," Whitmore said.

"They have the same team that played in the Digicel Caribbean Cup and we expected them to sit back, but once we kept the ball moving we knew it would kill them off."

But he did admit that his players had some improvement in them for the upcoming matches.

"I think the guys could have done more tonight," Whitmore added. "I think finishing was a big letdown on our part, but they managed to score four to start a competition and what a way to start."

In the other Group B match at The Home Depot Center, Honduras and Guatemala played out a scoreless draw despite the fact that the Guatemalans played the final half-hour with ten men when Gustavo Cabrera was sent off for a second bookable offence.

Group C kicks off today with matches between Panama and Guadeloupe and then the USA and Canada, both at Ford Field in Detroit.
