Goals will soon flow for Newcastle says Pardew

Newcastle United boss Alan Pardew is confident strikers Emmanuel Riviere and Siem de Jong will be hitting the back of the net with regularity as they adjust to their new environment.

Frenchman Riviere arrived at St James' Park from Monaco for £6million earlier this summer while Dutch forward de Jong joined the Magpies for around the same fee also in the current transfer window.

The pair started in Tuesday night's 1-0 Capital One Cup second round victory over Gillingham and although they struggled in front of goal, Pardew is backing the new strike duo to be a success for the north east club this season.

"I just think we've shown real solid team performances in the three matches so far, without really getting a break in front of goal," said Pardew when quizzed on both his team and his new additions.

"So many times we could have got a break tonight and we could have got a second or third goal and it didn't happen for us.

"I'm hoping to get a break on Saturday, we just need one break. It would be nice to score two or more goals on Saturday.

"The way (this weekend's opponents Crystal) Palace play, how quick they are on the break, you sense that they could score, so it might mean we do need to get two or three goals so that's what our focus must be."

Newcastle have progressed to the third round of the league cup courtesy of John Egan's 25th-minute own-goal at Priestfield.
