Jamie Carragher believes his former Liverpool teammate Steven Gerrard will be eager to depart the club on positive terms.
The Reds skipper was sent off in ugly fashion just 43 seconds after making his way onto the Anfield pitch half-time of his side's eventual 2-1 loss to Manchester United on Sunday.
Gerrard produced a strong tackle on Juan Mata moments before stomping on the leg of Ander Herrera which prompted referee Martin Atkinson to rightly brandish a red card and Carragher feels it was a poor way to end his lengthy rivalry with United.
"He wouldn't have wanted it to end like this," Carragher said on Sky Sports.
"He's still got five or six games. From the club's point of view firstly, but from his point of view, I'd love to see Liverpool get in the FA Cup final for him.
"But the way it's gone since that Boxing Day game, it's not how he or anyone around Liverpool would like to see him go out because of what he's done for the club, you want to see someone like that go out on a massive high."
