Niall Quinn believes Sunderland ought to contemplate appointing Sam Allardyce as their new manager.
The Black Cats are seeking a new boss after Dick Advocaat turned down a three-year deal to remain at the Stadium of Light.
Former chairman and star striker Quinn has implored Sunderland to at least speak to ex-Newcastle United boss Allardyce who recently parted ways with West Ham United.
"I think (they need) someone who can get them away from that fear that runs through the football club when they start off badly in the football season, as has happened in a good few seasons," he told Sky Sports.
"I certainly would check out if Big Sam was interested."
Sunderland are also being linked with Burnley's Sean Dyche and former Fulham manager Martin Jol.
