Former Blackpool defender pitches up at Gillingham

Former Blackpool and Tottenham left-back Joe Martin has been snapped up by Gillingham boss Andy Hessenthaler. The 22-year-old, who was a free agent following his release from Bloomfield Road in the summer, has signed on a non-contract basis for the English Championship club and could make his debut in Saturday's game at Macclesfield.

Hessenthaler told the club's official website: "Joe is another left-footer, he's a good size, very strong in the air and you need that aerial presence in this division, especially if you are playing a big strong side like Macclesfield. He's a very good defender.

"He can head it, tackle and put his body on the line but he also likes to join in and get on the football and he has a nice left foot.

"He played a few games for Blackpool in the Championship last season. He's only young and he has a decent pedigree. We're very excited to have him on board."
