Democratic politician Fabian Nunez is the head of a group exploring the possibilities of starting a MLS franchise in Elk Grove, California.
The former Assembly Speaker, who sits on the US Soccer board, is being assisted by Sacramento attorney Dick Hyde who told sacbee.com that there is a distinct opportunity for another Californian club.
"I wouldn't characterize it as a long shot, but it's an endeavor that's in its infancy," said Hyde, who was part of a group that tried to bring the MLS to Sacramento a decade ago. "I think Elk Grove is probably a really good spot for soccer."
The report added that: 'Elk Grove officials are ready to at least look into the concept. The City Council tonight is expected to approve a negotiating agreement with Nunez's group, Northern California Soccer LLC.'
It appears as though MLS will not be looking towards Sacramento in the next few years as they prepare for the inclusion of Montreal Impact in 2012 and the look towards a second team in New York but league spokesman Dan Courtemanche indicated it was a promising area.
"Sacramento is certainly a market that has supported the sport," he said.
