Former AEK Athens striker Burns vindicates supreme talent with top A-League award

by Tim McGlone

Wellington Phoenix's Nathan Burns has gone some way to justifying his considerable talent after claiming the Johnny Warren Medal as the Hyundai A-League's Player of the Season last night.

Burns scored 13 goals in 25 games in his debut season for the Phoenix, playing his best football since bursting on to the scene as a teenager with Adelaide United 10 years ago.

After making his Socceroos debut as a 19-year old in 2007, Burns was one of the hottest prospects in Australian football.

His career stalled after failed stints with Greek giants AEK Athens and Korean club Incheon United, however the 27-year old has rediscovered his best form in the A-League, with last night's triumph capping a remarkable return to prominence.

Burns' scintillating form has led to speculation of a big money move to Asia in recent times, however it is understood that Wellington intend on keeping their star man next season.
