Ex-Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher has emerged as a leading candidate to become the club's technical director.

The 35-year-old has held negotiations with the club over the role, according to Sky Sports.

United are aiming to bring in somebody who can act as the glue between the board and manager, not a "transfer guru" as has been widely reportedly.

Paul Mitchel and Rio Ferdinand are also candidates for the role.

However, the report claims Fletcher is likely to take the job.
