Fiorentina hand Mutu backing after Chelsea compo ruling

Fiorentina president Andrea Della Valle says the club is fully behind Adrian Mutu after he was ordered to pay Chelsea over £14 million last week.

The Romanian lost his appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport and must pay his old club £14.5m in damages after testing positive for cocaine in 2005.

Della Valle said: "The club is behind him. Adrian needs to relax on this, it all seems rather over the top. Now the player is upset and angry, but with time it will pass.

"The whip-round is a good idea and I will help organise it tonight. Perhaps if the two parties could meet and discuss matters calmly, many things could be clarified."

There are reports failure to pay could see Mutu suspended by the football authorities, which would have a devastating effect on Fiorentina.

"We will get all the information we can in the next few days so we can look after Mutu's interests."
