Les Ferdinand's appointment at QPR has cast doubt over the future of manager Harry Redknapp.
The Telegraph says Ferdinand has been appointed as head of football operations with the task of overhauling the club's philosophy from top to bottom.
Redknapp had wanted to add the former Rangers forward to his back-room staff but there is believed to be friction between manager and board over Ferdinand's exact role.
Redknapp's new contract has been put on ice following the club's dismal return to the Premier League and Ferdinand has been handed a key role in the club's recruitment policy, with the emphasis on finding young talent after another costly transfer window.
