Federico Fernandez pleased with new deal at Newcastle

Federico Fernandez is delighted with his new contract at Newcastle United.

The defender has signed a new deal and with it likely to be the final one of his playing career, given he's 32, Fernandez has revealed the role his family played in making the decision.

"I'm really happy to have signed the new deal," he told NUFC TV.

"Thinking with the family through the summer it was always the first option to continue at the club.

"I'm really pleased to get the contract sorted out and now it's time to start work again.

"As a family, we chatted and worked out our goals and I tried to say to the gaffer and to the club what my ambition is - they showed me their confidence. I see it too in them."

Fernandez is hoping the club can push on in the 2021-22 season and do more than scrap for safety again.

He feels that the fans deserve that and is full of praise for the kind words they've sent him once the news of a new deal broke.

"From day one the connection with the fans, the city, how passionate they are - it's something you dream of.

"Throughout these three years, they have shown so much love.

"They can see how passionate I am for this, how ambitious I am for this club.

"It was nice to see the messages for my family, for me."
