The Football Association have hit back at suggestions the FA Cup is losing its lustre by reporting the biggest average attendance on third-round weekend since 1980. Remarkably, 28 ties attracted 514,172 supporters, an average of 18,363, compared with 19,160 30 years ago.
Admittedly, four games were postponed, including matches at Accrington, Notts County and Brentford which would have dragged the average gate down, but the FA still believe it is testament to the enduring appeal of the competition.
There is also a belief that the exceptionally wintry conditions over the weekend contributed to low crowds at Middlesbrough, for the visit of Manchester City, and Wigan, where just 5,335 turned up for an all-Premier League duel with Hull.
"Every year we monitor attendances at FA Cup ties closely," said an FA spokesman.
"We will continue with clubs, supporters and media to do all we can to promote the competition."
The FA will also hope a fourth-round draw which includes tricky away trips for Chelsea and Arsenal to Preston and Stoke respectively, plus Leeds' trip to Tottenham, will capture the imagination.
