FA CUP 3rd ROUND: Burnley hold Tottenham as Gerrard double sees Liverpool past Wimbledon

Steven Gerrard scored a brace as Liverpool saw off AFC Wimbledon in the third round of the FA Cup on Monday night.

The Reds skipper, who recently announced he will be leaving the club at the end of the season, struck either side of the break at Kingsmeadow to send his side through to the fourth round with a 2-1 victory.

Gerrard's opening goal came in the 12th minute with a stooping header before Wimbledon's 'Beast', Adebayo Akinfenwa, levelled on 36 minutes with a close range finish after Simon Mignolet failed to clear the ball.

It appeared as though League Two Wimbledon may have been able to snatch an historic victory but Gerrard saved Liverpool with a 22-yard free-kick from just after the hour-mark.

Brendan Rodgers' Reds side will now host Championship side Bolton at Anfield on the weekend of January 24/25 in the next phase.

In Monday night's other tie, Burnley forced a 1-1 draw with Premier League rivals Tottenham at Turf Moor thanks to a goal from the returning Sam Vokes.

The Welsh striker, who has been sidelined with a knee injury for nine months, fired home an equaliser in the 73rd minute after Nacer Chadli had put Spurs ahead ten minutes into the second half.

The result will force a replay between the sides, who contested the 1962 FA Cup final, with the winner to take on Leicester City in the fourth round.
