Exclusive: Dan Agger on Man Utd ace Eriksen - 'I thought he was too nice to reach very top'

HB Koge coach Dan Agger admits he thought Christian Eriksen was "too nice" a personality to make it at the very top.

Agger, now in his second season in charge of HB Koge at home in Denmark, played with Eriksen for the national team - including at the 2012 Euros.

Eriksen has rebuilt his career since suffering a cardiac arrest at Euro 2020, first returning to the game with Brentford before securing a dream move to Manchester United. This season, before a heavy ankle injury suffered in an ugly challenge from Reading veteran Andy Carroll, Eriksen was playing some of the best football of his career.

Asked if he felt his old teammate would recover as he has, Agger told Tribalfootball.com: "I don't know if that surprised me.

"But yes, yes, we played a lot of games together. I don't think that really surprised me."

Recalling Eriksen's initial recovery, Agger says: "It has always been difficult to assess exactly where he was. I don't think there are very many people who knew in terms of whether he could play again or not. But I thought that if he made the decision that he could play, I had no doubt that he would probably find his level.

"So, I have not had any doubts about that."

Agger, who spent eight years with Liverpool and boasts over 75 caps, admits when first coming across United's playmaker, he wasn't convinced Eriksen had the qualities to reach the very top.

"He certainly had the qualities, but he was clearly too nice a boy. That usually doesn't get you very far.

"But he was able to use it positively. Yes, because he's still no slouch on a football pitch. And he's managed to come back well."
