Ex-Watford defender DeMerit set for Germany

Former Watford defender Jay DeMerit is set to join a German Bundesliga club according to English reports.

The USA international has been without a club since leaving Watford at the end of last season but has recently been linked with Wolfsburg, Schalke and Werder Bremen.

UK radio station talkSPORT suggested that Wolfsburg boss Steve McLaren "is ready to pluck Jay DeMerit from the wilderness and give the USA defender a career lifeline."

Whilst The Guardian added: "Schalke and Werder Bremen are interested in the central defender too and there is also interest from Italy and Spain. But sources close to DeMerit have revealed that former England manager McClaren ... is ready to beat his rivals to it by offering DeMerit a deal."

30-year old DeMerit, who played every minute of the USA's World Cup campaign, is available as a free agent after Watford failed to renew his contract despite the fact he was captain of the Championship club.
