Ex-Southampton striker Austin slams Hasenhuttl: He threw players under bus

Former Southampton player Charlie Austin has accused sacked manager Ralph Hasenhuttl of being "quick to throw the team under the bus" after poor results.

The Austrian was given his marching orders with the team in the relegation zone at present.

The Saints will have to drastically improve their form of the past 12 months if they are to avoid relegation from the Premier League.

Austin, who is now 33, was on the books at Southampton when Hasenhuttl took charge in December 2018.

"It was all about him," Austin told talkSPORT on Tuesday.

"He was quick to throw the team under the bus when the team was doing poorly.

“But when they were doing great, it was all about him.

"When you're being asked if you can get out of a blip and you say, 'No' - I don't think any manager can say that.

“You need to galvanise your team. Even if you don't believe it, you need to say you can turn it around."
