Ex-NYRB, Barcelona midfielder Celades lands Spain U21 job

Former New York Red Bulls midfielder Albert Celades has been appointed as Spain's U21 manager.

The 38-year old Catalonia native, who has replaced Julen Lopetegui, will lead the Spanish side through the end of their 2015 UEFA European U21 Championship qualifying campaign.

Celades had a successful playing career with FC Barcelona, Celta Vigo, Real Madrid, Bordeaux, Real Zaragoza and the Red Bulls as a defensive midfielder and was recently the head coach of La Furia Roja's U16 side.

Celades, who was in New York in 2009, has revealed that he could quite possibly return to the city in some sort of soccer capacity in the future.

"I have a great memory and, as I said, great affection for the club and the city," he told FutbolMLS.com.

"Suffice it to say that my first daughter was born there, so I have a very special bond with New York.

"It is a wonderful, engaging city.

"We had a great year personally and I do not rule coming back to work there someday. In fact, I love it."
