Ex-Newcastle, Sunderland defender Caldwell: I relish being Toronto FC captain

Steven Caldwell admits he is eager to remain as captain of MLS club Toronto FC.

The 34-year old Scottish defender has been Reds skipper since July 2013 but his tenure in the role is in doubt ahead of the 2015 campaign.

Former Newcastle United, Sunderland, Burnley and Birmingham City centre-back Caldwell remains contracted to TFC until the end of the year and during that time he would love to hold onto the Reds' armband.

"I'd be disappointed," Caldwell said.

"I love being captain of this football club. I've captained every team I've played for since I was 15.

"It's something I relish, I enjoy and I think I'm quite good at it. It's a great honor to be a captain of any club and I don't treat it lightly.

"I love being captain of Toronto so I hope I stay that."

Michael Bradley has been tipped to take over the captaincy reins at the BMO Field but it remains to be seen whether or not head coach Greg Vanney retains 12-time Scotland international Caldwell.
