Ex-Newcastle defender Bernard: Borussia Dortmund simply too good

Former Newcastle United defender Ollie Bernard admits Borussia Dortmund were simply too good last night.

Newcastle lost 1-0 at St James' Park in their latest Champions League encounter.

"You've got to put it away, we had enough chances to do it. When it doesn't go for you, it doesn't," he said.

"We played PSG where everything was going in, we kept the ball well away from them but Dortmund was a different side. We did struggle to put the ball in the back of the net. I think when we talk about quality, that's what we were lacking last night. Composure and quality.

"There's enough in this squad to operate without a typical centre forward. We've got runners, we've got players who can adjust but having a number nine was probably what Newcastle were lacking last night. A goalscorer that would punish Dortmund for the few mistakes they made at the back.

"It's a difficult stadium to go to but I think Newcastle do need a plan B to be able to make sure that they get the three points. There's big games coming up. There's still PSG, still Milan to play again and Dortmund.

"We are going to have to dig deep to go through."
