Ex-Newcastle defender Anderson: Borussia Dortmund lessons must be heeded

Former Newcastle defender John Anderson says the players will learn from last night's Champions League defeat.

Anderson admits Borussia Dortmund showed a new determination that Newcastle's players haven't encountered.

"The difference between this and the PSG game was Dortmund came with a determination and that ensured a work ethic that PSG didn't have and they matched us," he told BBC Sport.

"They were the better side in the first half, but the second half we were more equal and hit the crossbar twice, but did we really do enough? Did we ask enough questions? I thought they were disciplined and defended well, they looked bright and defended in numbers.

"It was a good learning curve. I think a lot of people after we beat PSG 4-1 at St James' Park though yeah this is easy, this is what it's all about, but that Dortmund side came with a totally different attitude to what that PSG side came with.

"They came saying if you're going to beat us then you're going to have to do it the hard way, you're going to have to break us down, you're going to have to work really hard for it. It was far too easy against PSG, Dortmund showed tonight what European football is all about and you've got to earn the right, you've got to work very very hard to get results.

"We go there in a fortnight and you imagine it's going to be as difficult over there as it was tonight."
