Ex-Newcastle boss Carver delighted for Burn after PSG thumping

Former Newcastle boss John Carver is delighted for the club after last night's win against PSG.

Newcastle thumped their Champions League opponents 4-1 at St James' Park.

Carver said on BBC Radio: "What an excellent morning. All the talk was about Mbappe before the game but the way we set up and the tactics was spot on from Eddie and his staff. I thought we won every single battle on the field, it was excellent.

"For Geordies on the pitch, for Geordies off the field, it was, for me, outstanding. Trying to pick man of the match between the two [Dan Burn and Sean Longstaff] was very difficult but great to see.

"Dan was a fan when we played in the Champions League back in 2003, he was a young guy sitting in the stand and I bet he never dreamt of actually playing in the Champions League but in particularly scoring the second goal.

"I'm getting emotional about it because I know how it feels to the people."

He also said: "If you look at what we did last year, our success was [based] on being organised, certainly defensively and with high press on the other end, making it difficult for the opposition to play. We came away from it a little bit this year but we've gone back to it and it's so noticeable.

"It's a big risk when you're playing against a side with the pace PSG had last night but because the pressure was so good and everybody knew their jobs, responsibilities, it was easy for them and when I look at PSG who are a top side, we made them look mediocre.

"I have to say it's a credit to how we set up and how well organised Eddie had the team, we press from the front when we needed to. They kept giving the ball away, I've never seen a team come to St James' Park and give away the ball so much as they did and that's credit to our team."
