Ex-Man Utd winger Wallace: LvG spending like Fergie in '89

Former Manchester United winger Danny Wallace says Louis van Gaal's first season reminds him of his first year under Sir Alex Ferguson.

Wallace was part of a raft of Fergie signings in 1989 which set the platform for a golden era for the club.

"What Sir Alex did in '89 is so similar to what Louis van Gaal has embarked on this season," Wallace told the Manchester Evening News.

"Fergie was trying to change things around and get the squad he wanted. He bought in myself, Gary Pallister, Paul Ince, Neil Webb and Mike Phelan that summer.

"Just like van Gaal has done bringing in Angel Di Maria, Radamel Falcao, Ander Herrera, Luke Shaw and Daley Blind when you buy in so many players things don't happen overnight.

"I am sure I don't have to remind anyone of that derby 5-1 defeat at City so soon after we all arrived. That game at Maine Road was my second match for United and it was a big shock. It was very scary and you do start to wonder what you have got yourself into.

"We all need the time to settle in just as the players United have signed this season have needed a period where they have to get used to Old Trafford and the manager. It is no different now from then. But you have to be patient and trust what is going on.

"At the end of that season I was playing in an FA Cup final at Wembley with United and winning the trophy against Crystal Palace. It all changed around and we all know what happened after that."
