Ex-Man Utd fullback Rafael: Van Gaal hated Sir Alex style

Former Manchester United fullback Rafael da Silva admits he never enjoyed playing for Louis van Gaal.

Now with Istanbul Basaksehir, Rafael was eventually sold by Van Gaal to Bordeaux.

Rafael was signed by Sir Alex Ferguson for United in 2008. The Scot had a different approach to Van Gaal, admits Rafael.

He told The Athletic: "The difference was in the instructions during training.

"Van Gaal asked us why we immediately passed the ball with our first contact. Ferguson thought that was fantastic to see. It is good for the pace of the game.

"Van Gaal hated it. He said we had to control the ball. Control it twice, Control it three... Thinking about it still gives me nightmares."

Rafael also recalled: "He said, 'You won't play this season, I'm not going to use you. If you want to leave, you can leave'. I said, 'Okay.'

"After that I tried to fight for my place. I stayed for a year and it was really hard. He is one of the worst people I have ever worked with."
