Ex-Man City, Southampton striker Wright-Phillips nets 25th NYRB goal

Bradley Wright-Phillips scored his 25th goal of the 2014 MLS season for the New York Red Bulls on the weekend.

The 29-year old English striker struck the opener in the Red Bulls' 3-1 win over Toronto FC at Red Bull Arena on Saturday night to move to within two goals of the single-season MLS record.

Wright-Phillips, whose former clubs include Manchester City, Southampton and Charlton Athletic, tapped home a low cross from Kosuke Kimura in the 26th minute to get the ball rolling before Ruben Bover's first MLS goal and Dax McCarty's late strike essentially wrapped up proceedings by half-time.

Toronto responded through Jonathan Osorio ten minutes into the second half but it did not stop New York from recording their second win on the trot to move up to fourth on the Eastern Conference table.

Wright-Phillips, who has scored his goals in 30 appearances, now has two regular season matches remaining to try and beat the 27-goal record set by former DC United striker Roy Lassiter in 1996 which was equaled by San Jose Earthquakes star Chris Wondolowski in 2012.
