Ex-Lyon striker Briand: Ronaldo apologised to me

Former France striker Jimmy Briand has recalled crossing swords with Cristiano Ronaldo as teenagers.

Briand is now a pundit in France, while former Manchester United striker Ronaldo is playing for Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia.

Briand said on Jmoins1: "We played against each other with Cristiano during the European U17 championship (in 2002).

"On the last action of the match, we had beaten them 2-0. Ronaldo was young, already very good, very personal but very emotional. He was a little p***sed that we were beating them and at the end of the match he put a heavy challenge on me.

"He had taken a red card, had therefore returned to the locker room, except that we were in the same hotel as the Portuguese. In the evening, I hear a knock on my door and it's Ronaldo who comes to apologise and ask me for my shirt. Then there was this photo that circulated a lot on social networks."

Nine years later, the pair again faced off in the Champions League, as Lyon met Real Madrid, with the pair again exchanging shirts at the end of the tie.
