Former Liverpool defender Stephane Henchoz says Thiago Alcantara made the difference against Ajax last night.

Thiago's return coincided with a crucial 2-1 Champions League win for the Reds.

Henchoz told BBC Sport: "I think it was more like the Liverpool we know, over the past year. When I heard Jurgen Klopp saying he was pleased with the intensity, the aggression, that is exactly what I felt yesterday. Right from the start, it was very different if you compare with the game against Napoli, which was horrible.

"Yesterday was good. A few players were back in the starting XI and it did make a huge difference.

"You've got Liverpool with and without Thiago. He is so important, we've seen it yesterday. Liverpool should have gone for somebody over the summer in the transfer window in the midfield. They are short of quality players.

"A few injured players like [Jordan] Henderson and Thiago, they find it difficult to produce the sort of football they would like to. They took Arthur from Juventus but I don't think he is the answer."
