Ex-Liverpool boss Houllier pays tribute to Reds quartet

Former Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier is proud of the four stars he worked with at Anfield.

Steven Gerrard, Michael Owen, Jamie Carragher and Gary McAllister were his favourites.

"They were winners," he told the Daily Mail. "Too many players are happy to go through their careers without winning anything. They take their money, and that's it. But Stevie, Michael, these guys want to win.

"I was not surprised to see Alex (Ferguson) give Michael another contract because he is an excellent professional; a great player to have around the dressing room.

"Macca was 35 when I signed him, and I was criticised for that. But with him we won five trophies.

"I do feel proud, because while I started coaching in the 70s, I continued to combine it with my teaching for many years. I never played professionally. That is true of many top managers. In my case it was because my father wanted me to get an education and a profession. But you don't need to be a horse to be a good jockey, no?"
