Ex-Hearts defender Goncalves joins New England Revolution

FC Sion defender Jose Goncalves has joined New England Revolution on a 12-month loan.

The 27-year old Portuguese centre-back will be added to the Revs playing roster upon receipt of his International Transfer Certificate (ITC) and P-1 Visa.

Former Heart of Midlothian and St Gallen defender Goncalves trained with the Revs late last year and general manager Mike Burns was happy to add him to a squad which struggled defensively to finish second bottom of the Eastern Conference table in 2012.

"He came and trained with us for a little bit in November," Burns told MLSsoccer.com.

"We liked what we saw. It took a little bit longer than we'd hoped to get the deal done with the player but, at the end of the day, we're glad we got it done. The bottom line is that we feel like he makes us a better team."

Goncalves added in a statement: "What a great start to the New Year. I'm happy to play for the Revolution and start a new career chapter in Major League Soccer.

"The entire organization, along with my new teammates, was very welcoming when I came in November to see the facilities and meet with everyone. It was great to see how the club was run and only further supported my decision to come to New England. I'm ready to join my teammates and to start the hard work to make it a successful 2013 season. I also look forward connecting and to become a productive member of the New England community."
