Ex-Everton ace McFadden should be in Scotland squad - Motherwell's Ainsworth

Motherwell loanee Lionel Ainsworth is of the belief that teammates James McFadden should be a key figure in the Scotland national team.

The former Everton, Birmingham City and Sunderland forward dominated in the Well's 4-1 win over Heart of Midlothian but it is not only that performance that has prompted Ainsworth, on loan from Rotherham United, to suggest he should be in Gordon Strachan's setup.

Scotland take on Poland in Warsaw on Wednesday night and Ainsworth feels McFadden, who last represented his country in 2010, should be right in the mix.

"Faddy is a really good player," he told the Daily Record.

"I watch him in training every day and he is top class. I see him do things and I think: 'Wow, I'll have to try that myself'.

"I said to him on Saturday that he had to get on the scoresheet and he's gone and scored with a difficult header.

"He's been brilliant and we just hope he stays fit - as I do with all the squad because we are depleted in some areas - and goes on to get more goals.

"He's got the hunger and the sharpness and for me he should be in the Scotland squad all day. But he's got to keep going."
