Ex-Cardiff, QPR striker Bothroyd backs Chelsea boss Mourinho's ref comments

Jay Bothroyd believes Jose Mourinho was in the right to criticise referee Martin Atkinson on the weekend.

The Chelsea boss appeared on Sky Sports program 'Goals on Sunday' after his side were held to a 1-1 draw by Burnley at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

Mourinho believes his side should have been awarded at least one penalty and was also furious with Atkinson when Nemanja Matic was sent off for reacting to a potentially disastrous lunging tackle by Ashley Barnes in the second half.

Mourinho said of Atkinson: "This gentleman is one of the top referees in this country, he's one of the top referees in European football.

"He can make mistakes. He made four important mistakes (on Saturday). You want consistency but consistency in the right way."

The Football Association may respond to Mourinho's comments negatively by issuing him another warning but former Cardiff City and QPR striker Bothroyd, currently with Japanese club Jubilo Iwata, took to Twitter to defend the Portuguese tactician.
