Ex-Blackburn midfielder Emerton: I'd rather play for Socceroos than take on Man Utd

Sydney FC star Brett Emerton suggests he would choose to play for the Socceroos rather than come up against Manchester United if he had the choice.

The former Blackburn Rovers midfielder would be a likely selection in the A-League All-Stars team which will face the Red Devils on July 20 in Sydney but he would rather represent his nation in the first match of the 2013 East Asian Cup to be held in South Korea.

''Both of them would be great to be involved in, and the Manchester United game would be a great spectacle, but I do love playing for the Socceroos,'' he said.

''While it's a great opportunity for us to blood some more young players in a competitive environment before the next World Cup, I'd certainly like to go. The likes of Japan and Korea are top football nations now and I'm quite excited about pitting ourselves against them. It's Holger's (Osieck) call, but I think there will be a mix of young and older players picked.''
