Ex-Barcelona star Marquez could again be in trouble with MLS

New York Red Bulls defender Rafael Marquez is facing a multi-game ban from MLS for his tackle on San Jose Earthquakes' Shea Salinas on the weekend.

The Mexican wrapped his arms around Salinas at a Quakes corner and rode him into the ground as the winger tried to get free as his side were on the attack. As Marquez rolled over Salinas, he also threw in a stray boot in for good measure, with the incident to be reviewed by the league.

Marquez's poor challenge on Salinas left the 25-year old with a broken collarbone in four places with MLS likely to look at the time he has to spend on the sidelines when judging the Red Bulls star.

New York general manager Erik Soler admits that Marquez ran a fine line on the weekend and has revealed that the club will sit down and chat about his actions which have again landed him in hot water.

"Any player that puts the team at risk during a game because of cards or suspension is worrying,'' said Soler.

"Rafa is a special player for us. We'd rather have no incidents than any incidents, so I think with him or anybody else it's something we're going to speak to him about and see if there's anything that needs adjusting.''
