Everton offered Andy van der Meyde to Wigan Athletic earlier this summer, it has been revealed.

Everton have suspended Van der Meyde and given the Dutch winger a maximum fine for missing training last Sunday.

The Guardian says Everton's willingness to remove the player, who has two years left on his contract, from their wage bill was demonstrated when their initial offer to Wigan Athletic for Leighton Baines included Van der Meyde moving to the JJB Stadium.
