Everton and Newcastle United are chasing Reading goalkeeper Alex McCarthy.
The Sunday Express says Goodison Park boss Roberto Martinez sees the 24-year-old, who has twice been called up into the England senior squad, as a long-term successor to Tim Howard.
Newcastle are monitoring McCarthy in case they receive an offer they can't refuse for highly-rated Dutch stopper Tim Krul, who is on Napoli's radar.
