Everton face battle to clinch Jagielka deal

Everton boss Dave Moyes faces a tough task to land Sheffield United defender Phil Jagielka.

The Daily Mail says Middlesbrough and Wigan have both told Bramall Lane they will pay more than Moyes' £4 million offer for Jagielka, who was released from Goodison as a youngster at the same time as Joey Barton.

But Jagielka believes Everton, who are in the UEFA Cup next season, present a better chance of winning trophies than Boro or Wigan, whose package would include at least one player in part-exchange.

New United boss Bryan Robson, who is now resigned to losing Jagielka to Goodison, wants to include Everton's Scotland defender Gary Naysmith in a deal that might take until next month.

Moyes is only willing to pay £2.5m for Jagielka if he has to include Naysmith, who cost £1.75m from Hearts in 2000, but Robson will demand a lower valuation of the Scot, who is 29 in November.
