Everton defender Coady explains decision leading to Liverpool goal

Everton defender Conor Coady admitted his calculated gamble went against him versus Liverpool.

The Toffees took on the Reds at Anfield in the Merseyside derby on Monday in the Premier League.

However, Everton were well beaten by the Reds, losing 2-0 to Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah goals.

For one of the goals, Coady let the ball run behind him thinking there was no one present.

Post-game, he told reporters: “I'll be honest with you, I was hoping nobody was going to be there."

He added: “The cross had a little bit of a deflection so it's hit more towards Picks [Pickford] and I was hoping nobody was gonna be there at the back because if I touch it I'll slide and I think it's going in my own net.

“No matter what it's going to go in the goal, and I was just hoping Seamus [Coleman] was there to knock it out or whatever it may be.

“It's one of them the counter attack was given away and when you're put into that situation it's a tough one to make a decision in that split moment. We're gutted by it, we're gutted by everything."
