Everton crash out of Europa League in Lisbon

Everton were dumped out of the Europa League 4-2 on aggregate after losing 3-0 at Sporting Lisbon. Sporting were by far the more superior team as Everton had a poor night and eventually paid the price for conceding the late goal at Goodison Park.

The Toffees reached the break all square and still ahead on aggregate until three goals in the second half effectively ended any hopes of the Merseysiders winning any silverware this season.

Miguel Veloso struck with a close-range strike and Pedro Mendes saw a deflected 22-yard shot beat Tim Howard before Matias Fernandez struck in injury-time.

Sporting had already struck the woodwork and been in imperious form so it was no surprise that the unadventurous visitor's should fare so badly.

The one piece of good news for a disappointed Everton boss David Moyes was the return of Phil Jagielka as a second-half substitute after a long-term injury.
