Everton boss Lampard explains decision to sign Maupay

Everton boss Frank Lampard has explained signing former Brighton striker Neal Maupay.

Maupay is in line for a debut today against Liverpool.

Asked what drew him to the Frenchman, Lampard said: "He scored mid-20s in the Championship [with Brentford] and in his three years at Brighton he scored 10, eight and eight. So I think in a Premier League team that is not bad, when you can look around at other clubs.

"On top of that from watching him from afar, I played against him when he was at Brentford and I was Derby manager and played against him when I was at Chelsea [as a manager] and he was at Brighton and he always gave us a problem, in terms of his hold-up play, his movement. There's always a feeling with him that he wanted to score goals. I know that sounds like it should be every striker's first thought... but I don't think that is always the case to the level that I would want it to be. And he does and he has the quality to do it."

Lampard added: "His profile is different to Dominic's. And he has got a character that means he wants to come here and win. The first conversation I had with him was 'I want to come and play for Everton'. And that is great to hear.

"Maybe he tells everyone else that - I don't know - but it felt very genuine to me. It felt like 'I want to come and play for you' and he had other options so that is pleasing for me. And that is when we come back to personalities. 'So do you want to play for Everton?' OK, we like your talents and he's here."
