Everton are trying to solve the riddle surrounding transfer target Manuel Fernandes.
A report on Valencia's website on Sunday night suggested that the Benfica midfielder, who enjoyed a loan spell at Goodison last season, had agreed a six-year deal at the Mestella and would sign subject to passing a medical.
But according to the Liverpool Echo, that left the Toffees baffled after the player trained at Bellfield last week and was at Goodison for Saturday's 1-1 draw with Blackburn.
They now face an anxious wait to see if the 21-year-old has turned his back on a move to the Premier League.
