Aston Villa are lagging behind in the Bosman battle for Leeds United striker Jermaine Beckford.
The Birmingham Mail says Beckford has opted to pursue his ambition of playing in the Premier League by running down his Elland Road contract.
Villa have made known their tentative interest in the 26-year-old striker who scored 31 goals in all competitions last season.
But rivals Everton are believed to be much further down the line in persuading Beckford to move to Goodison Park.
Villa and the Toffees had the worst scoring records in the top eight last season and are both keen to boost their attacking options.
