Leighton Baines is set to be sidelined for up to three months after undergoing surgery on a troublesome ankle.
The Everton left-back has had the operation to correct an ongoing problem which he has struggled with for around three years.
Baines, who limped off during Saturday's 2-0 loss to Sunderland, is now expected to be sidelined until mid-August meaning he will miss upcoming fixtures for England against the Republic of Ireland and Slovenia.
"The advice from the specialist is that we treat it well. He has got a good period to refresh and he will come back stronger than ever," said Toffees boss Roberto Martinez.
"He always puts himself forward to be available and when you are not pain free, it is hard.
"It was quite evident how much pain he was in against Sunderland. At the start of the next campaign, he will be ready to go again."
