EUROPA LEAGUE WRAP - Ro32: Tottenham, Liverpool and Celtic crash out as Everton cruise

The Round of 32 of the 2014/15 UEFA Europa League was completed on Thursday night with a trio of UK clubs crashing out.

In heartbreaking fashion, Liverpool were removed from Europe's second tier competition by virtue of a penalty shootout defeat to Besiktas at the Ataturk Stadium in Istanbul.

At the venue of their famous Champions League win in the final over AC Milan in 2005, the Reds were unable to repeat the dose after a 1-0 loss in the second leg which forced the game into extra-time.

Besiktas, in front of their customary parochial fans, held their nerve in the shootout to win narrowly over a side who had failed in the group stage of the Champions League earlier in the season.

Joining the Anfield outfit on the European scrapheap for this campaign are Tottenham who were beaten 2-0 by Fiorentina at the Stadio Artemio Franchi to lose 3-1 on aggregate to the Italian club.

Mario Gomez and Mohamed Salah, on loan from Chelsea, netted in the second half to condemn Spurs to a disappointing defeat just days out from their Capital One Cup final against the Blues at Wembley.

Scottish giants Celtic were unable to create club history when losing 1-0 to Inter Milan at the San Siro, maintaining their inability to beat Italian clubs away from home.

Last week's 3-3 draw in Glasgow set up the Nerazzurri in the second leg who had Fredy Guarin to thank for their eventual triumph.

Everton backed up their comfortable 4-1 win over Young Boys last Thursday by overcoming the Swiss side 3-1 at Goodison Park with Romelu Lukaku netting a double to add to last week's hat-trick.

Elsewhere, Russian giants Zenit St Petersburg easily accounted for Dutch leaders PSV Eindhoven 4-0 on aggregate, Sevilla edged past Borussia Monchengladbach 4-2 thanks to a 3-2 second leg win in Germany, Ajax got the better of Legia Warsaw 4-0, Napoli downed Trabzonspor 5-0 and Roma narrowly defeated Feyenoord 3-2 courtesy of tonight's 2-1 win in Rotterdam.
