Europa League: Man Utd leave it late to defeat Omonia Nicosia

Manchester Utd needed an injury time winner to see of Omonia Nicosia 1-0 whose inspired keeper Francis Uzoho looked to have gained the visitors an unlikely point.

Omonia are now winless in 18 away games in major European competitions but almost pulled off a major shock by drawing at Old Trafford as Utd struggled to take their chances.

Seven days ago Utd struggled to defeat Omonia 3-2 and were grateful to substitute Marcus Rashford for a brace which helped them avoid an upset. The same player took just one minute to bring a fine save out of visitor's keeper Francis Uzoho. And that set the tone for the opening half with the host's dominant but the Nigerian stopper making a string a fine stops.

Rashford had three chances but each time Uzoho was equal to the efforts. Ronaldo hit the side netting and had a couple of half chances whilst Bruno Fernandes fired narrowly wide but the nearest to an opening goal was Casemiro who rattled the crossbar from distance.

But just before the break came a wake-up call for the home side. With Omonia non existent as an attacking force Bruno broke down the left outpacing his marker but from a tight angle fired over from inside the penalty area. Then Andronikos Kakoulli looked to have been fouled when breaking clear, much to the disdain of the vocal Cypriot supporters and their manager Neil Lennon.

Within two minutes of the second half the keeper again kept Utd at bay with a brilliant double save, first from Anthony then Rashford on the rebound followed by Fred's close range shot.

This looked like it was going to be a frustrating night for the home side when Rashford again broke clear but fired wide. Wave after wave of Utd attacks kept bearing down on the Omonia goal which was leading a charmed life through a mixture of inspired keeping and poor finishing.

Utd had a shout for a penalty when the ball hit the arm of Omonia's Bruno but VAR comes to their rescue. The vocal away support continued their chanting. With time ticking down Utd began to look desperate snatching at their shots and sending hopeful balls into the penalty area.

Five additional minutes gave Utd hope and they took full advantage as substitute Scott McTominay finally beat Uzoho from close range. The roar of relief from the Old Trafford faithful when the deadlock was broken said it all.
