EURO2016: Wales breathe fire to claim top spot in Group B

Wales have created history by moving through to the knockout stage of the European Championships at their first attempt.

Chris Coleman's Dragons produced a faultless performance to defeat Russia 3-0 in Toulouse which sees them finish top of Group B ahead of neighbours England in their first major tournament since the 1958 World Cup.

Goals from Aaron Ramsey, Neil Taylor and star man Gareth Bale did the job as the fire-breathing Wales cruised into the last 16 of the UEFA tournament in France at the expense of a shambolic Russian outfit who end the competition with a solitary point.

A dream night for the Welsh kicked off in the 11th minute when Joe Allen supplied a defence-piercing ball for Ramsey who took a lovely first touch with outside of his right foot before deftly chipping over an advancing Igor Akinfeev from just inside the area.

That set the tone for the contest and it wasn't too long before the Welsh had doubled their advantage over a Russian side who were looking way out of their depth.

On 20 minutes, Bale galloped through midfield and provided a ball of delight for onrushing wingback Taylor who saw his initial effort parried away by Akinfeev before following up the rebound with a sweet volley from close range for his first international goal.

There were a couple of chances as the first half progressed, namely when Bale made a marauding run into the box before teeing up Sam Vokes with a clever lay-off but Akinfeev was on hand to thwart the striker's efforts before Ramsey tried his luck from range only for the busy Russian gloveman to fist away.

Wales opted to knock it around early in the second half as they soaked up the minutes but a third goal was certainly on the cards and it came with just over 20 minutes remaining.

A ball from the right side of central midfield from Ramsey found it's way to a completely unmarked Bale who controlled on the left side of the area, before producing a simple yet clever finish with the outside of his trusty left foot to notch his third goal of the tournament and move to the top of the individual charts.

The result sees Wales end the group stage with six points, one point ahead of the English, and they will now wait and see which third-placed side from from Group A, C or D they will meet in the initial knockout phase.

England will next take on the runner-up of Group F which includes Hungary, Iceland, Portugal and Austria, with Slovakia odds-on to finish the group stage one of the best-performed third-placed teams which will allow them to compete in the Round of 16 as Leonid Slutsky's Russia pack their bags for home.
