England coach Southgate urged to take Newcastle defender Burn to Qatar

Veteran football manager Neil Warnock claims Gareth Southgate should only take in form players to Qatar for the World Cup.

The England boss is busy outlining his provisional squad for the tournament.

Southgate can name up to 55 players who may be called up for the tournament this winter, however, only 26 will eventually travel.

Warnock advised Southgate to take Newcastle's Dan Burn, as an example of someone who has made an outstanding start to this season.

Warnock told talkSPORT: "I think if he's not careful, Gareth, his loyalty to his players will be his downfall, because I know what it's like. You are loyal to the players that have done well for you but they're not [playing well].

"Against the opposition they're going to come up against, I hope it doesn't let him down because I think he's done fantastic. That's one I think, you don't tend to pick form players, you tend to go long-term with ones that you've used but I think he has to come up with a short-term.

"The ones that are in form. Gomez has played fantastic in his last couple of games. You know me lads, everybody laughed at me when I said Dan Burn in my team and I tell you now he's Mr. Steady Eddy.

"He can play centre-half. No I know he isn't slow, to see how big he is, but I picked him in my Premier League team a year ago."
